The worm drives helically through the wood
And does not know the dust left in the bore
Once made the table integral and good;
And suddenly the crystal hits the floor.
Electrons find their paths in subtle ways,
A massless eddy in a trail of smoke;
The names of lovers, light of other days
Perhaps you will not miss them. That's the joke.
The universe winds down. That's how it's made.
But memory is everything to lose;
Although some of the colors have to fade,
Do not believe you'll get the chance to choose.
Regret, by definition, comes too late;
Say what you mean. Bear witness. Iterate.

Two great poems
Sadly, I have read very little poetry in the years since I left college.
However, I recently read a wonderful poem, which references another wonderful poem... so I'm saving them here for later.
First poem: Sirens by Sarah Howe (link fixed now)
References another poem: Elegy for Jane by Theodore Roethke

I saw this and I wanted it
Let us go then, me and you,
When the awards are nearly due,
Like shoggoths dissected upon a table;
Let us go, through eldritch winding blogs,
Muttering and wordy slogs,
Of those upset in one-line tweets
And those who pound the well-worn beats:
“PC censorship!”–a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question….
Oh, do not ask, “What the hell is that?”
You behold the bust of Lovecraft.

In the room the fans go fore and aft,
Talking of H. Phillip Lovecraft.

I love the 21st century!
I love this new century we're living in:
Watched CSI: NY on the TiVo. (that's Thing I Like #1)
Heard a song I really liked during the opening montage. Looked up its lyrics via the Internet (this is Thing #2)
In this case, it didn't work. Found a couple songs that come close, including an awesome cover by Adele of a Bonnie Raitt song, but not this one.
So I went to one of the CSI: NY fan websites and found not only this song, but EVERY song from this season listed there. (Fan websites that contain actual content = Thing #3)
For the record: the song is "Love is a Madness" by No Sinners and the lyrics I searched were
Well if I can't make you love me
And I can't make you pretend
And I can't make you want me, baby
Then there's nothing else to recommend
I guess it's gotta end

Argh...
Well, I'm exhausted and coughing; both my kids seem to be sick, too.
I have a huge pile of tests to grade and no time to knit.
Bleah? Yeah. Fortunately there's always silly math poetry:
A dozen, a gross, and a score
plus three times the square root of four
divided by seven
plus five times eleven
is nine squared and not a bit more.
